FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KINGS PARK, NY - February 17, 2007 - Today, version 6.0 of the Ren'Py visual novel engine was released. Ren'Py is an easy-to-use, full-featured, and free program that makes it simple for even non-programmers to create games that tell stories using text, pictures, and music.

Ren'Py 6.0 streamlines the existing Ren'Py language and incorporates dozens of new features, including support for minigames, zooming, and rotation. Using the included suite of development tools, game creation, editing, and distribution can be as simple as writing a movie script.

About Visual Novels

Visual novels (sometimes known as dating sims) are computer games that bring stories to life through text, music, and sound. While any game can have those three elements, visual novels stand out for their emphasis on telling engaging stories, rather than testing player reflexes. Visual novels often have branching plotlines, so the player's choices affect what happens to the characters.

Though their popularity has inspired many anime series in Japan, visual novels were almost unknown in the English-speaking world until recently. In the past few years, dozens of developers, including major commercial game developers, have taken to this form and released visual novels for English-language audiences.

About the Ren'Py Visual Novel Engine

With more than 30 games released to date, Ren'Py is the most popular visual novel engine among English-language developers. It has been used by development teams from around the world, and supports the majority of the world's languages. Its simple, movie script like language simplifies making games, allowing many games to be created without the involvement of a dedicated programmer, and with a minimum of work. At the same time, this language scales to large and complex games.

Ren'Py is an open-source project, created by a community of dedicated programmers, artists, writers, and musicians. The full version of Ren'Py is available as a free download, and may be used to create commercial and non-commercial games without subjecting users to unwanted advertising. Ren'Py games run on the Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, and Linux platforms.

While Ren'Py 6.0 has taken over five months to create, developers have not been forced to wait for these new features. Subscribing to a "release early, release often" philosophy, the Ren'Py development team has made point releases available on an approximately monthly basis. These production-quality releases have allowed the new features to see use in a variety of games.
